It was great to see the children taking part so well in last week's service with readings and prayers.
Here they are collecting their end of term prizes...if it looks like a total rammy you can see from the photo which adult was in charge at this point.

Summer Sunday School
If you see this bold fellow around over the Summer it's because the children are looking at the Armour of God from Ephesians.
And here is the memory verse they are learning over the next few weeks - why not set yourself the same challenge?
Ephesians 6v18 (Children’s International Bible)
Pray in the Spirit at all times.
Pray with all kinds of prayers, and ask for everything you need.
To do this you must always be ready.
Never give up.
Always pray for all God’s people
Thanks!
I would like to thank everyone for the very generous voucher and gorgeous flowers you gave to me last week as I retired from playgroup. I have been so blessed working as part of an amazing team.
I am looking forward to a trip back to the Borders to choose a picture.

Holyrood Happenings
This week was Royal week at Holyrood.
The Queen herself was at Holyrood accompanied by Charles and Camilla, Edward and Sophie and Anne and Timothy. Nicola Sturgeon got to visit too... but that's not all - they invited a number of people from Maxwell to join them!
Wednesday was the Queen's Royal Garden Party. Pauline was invited through her volunteering with Girlguiding and Gail Neely (daughter of Margaret Campbell) through her work at local authority level. Colin and Margaret got to come along to enjoy the afternoon (and multiple cucumber sandwiches, cakes, cups of tea, elderflower drinks and ice creams too)
Then on Friday it was the turn of Cathy Renn and Holly Pryce who have both been awarded with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Huge congratulations to the girls for their hard work and determination to complete the highest award in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

Proposed Legislation Limiting Gatherings Near Medical Centres Which Include Abortion
The First Minister has recently announced her support for legislation to restrict gatherings close to medical centres that include abortion. Our own Hannah McNicol has been appointed spokesperson for the single-issue group, “Compassion Scotland” which is concerned about the limitations being proposed by this legislation. You can see their website
here.
I asked Hannah to help us understand the issues (see Hannah’s comments below). You can see an interview
here with Hannah on STV’s Scotland Tonight.
I think it would be good to pray for Hannah that she would be able to speak with clarity and accuracy. Pray also for her protection as prominent involvement in such an emotive issue can bring strong and sometimes vicious opposition.

Compassion Scotland
I’m Hannah McNicol and I am a member at Maxwell, and am also part of Compassion Scotland. It is a voluntary organisation made up of women that are campaigning against the implementation of buffer zones. Buffer zones would criminalise both pro-life and pro-choice groups from gathering outside abortion clinics. Compassion Scotland seeks to defend the groups that wish to offer life-affirming resources to abortion-minded women and to defend freedom of expression.
True EmpathyA huge reason that Compassion holds the position that we do is because buffer zones would criminalise attempts to offer help, support, and information to expectant mothers at what can be a time of crisis. A survey done by the BBC that was published on 14 March 2022 said: ‘15% of women in our survey told us they'd experienced pressure to terminate a pregnancy when they didn't want to.’ Watch
here.
It is evident that if someone is coerced into doing something, they are not giving consent at all. Pro-life vigils outside of abortion clinics are the last safeguard possible against coercion, by showing the alternative options available.
Freedom of SpeechBuffer zones would amount to a breach of the right to assembly, the right to freedom of speech and the right to freedom of religion. These rights are of course fundamental to a society in which there is a lot of diversity of belief. A feature of buffer zones is that they would ban people from visibly praying outside abortion clinics. This obviously sets a worrying precedent for the future – the government would be able to tell people where they can and cannot pray.
As a group of women, we absolutely agree that no woman should ever face harassment or intimidation. Which is why we are thankful that our criminal law already criminalises threatening or abusive behaviour under section 3B of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. The existence of the breach of the peace offence also means that conduct which is alarming or disturbing to others can be prosecuted. These laws are sufficiently broad to ensure any harassment or intimidation is properly criminalised without the need to create a censorship zone on public land.

Wearing Gospel Gore-Tex Where Piranha Swim
SCOTTY SMITH
“As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Col. 3:12
Dear Jesus, in preparation for an upcoming fly-fishing trip to Montana, I decided it’s time to check for leaks in my Gore-Tex chest-waders. This lightweight layer of protection has served me well in various conditions. Fortunately, only trout, not piranha, inhabit the Smith River.
However, in the oceans, rivers, and streams of life, it’s different. Various species of toothy-piranha swim and bite at will. In recent years, they seem to be multiplying. Jesus, thank you for giving us something far better than Simms Gore-Tex waders, for preparation and protection. As your “chosen, set-apart, and dearly loved” people, there are 5 articles we are to clothe ourselves with all the time: “Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
These 5 grace-garments are never out of style, breathable but warm, and very comfortable next to the heart. They serve us well in every setting, no matter the “temperature.” There are times when we need to receive good (if painful) feedback with humility, teachability, and a non-defensive spirit.
Other times we are the targets of unjust criticism, “drive-by-spite-shootings,” devilish condemnation, or are simply an easy snack for anonymous “gossip-piranha.” All metaphors and analogies aside, Jesus, this is serious stuff.
How we love, react, and respond matters—whether we are on the receiving or giving end of feedback. You have told us “the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love” (Gal. 5:6). Help us Jesus, big time, help us. So Very Amen.

Big Arran Challenge
GLASGOW CITY MISSION
We are holding our Big Arran Challenge on Saturday 17 September.
Whether you choose to cycle, climb, or take part in our duathlon event, we’re confident you’ll have a great day. By taking part, you’ll be helping to tackle homelessness and poverty in Glasgow. Glasgow City Mission has been providing Christian Care since 1826 to those on the margins of our society. Today, we welcome approximately 200 men and women each weekday to our building in the heart of Glasgow for lunch, dinner and practical, immediate support. We provide a safe, warm space to build relationships, understand what’s brought the person to us and how we can help them move forward.
