We are now open for Worship - have you booked for a Sunday Morning yet?

Hi,
Hope this finds you well.

'So, was Jesus a person?' 'Why would God do that?' ' I don't ignore God - I just don't think about Him...oh yeah'. If you've had any conversations like this recently perhaps you've been using the Word one 2 one material. I've found it to be really good to get to the heart of things. All the Bible verses and comments are there so you don't need to be an expert. I've really enjoyed doing it - in person and on Zoom too.  Who can you ask? All the details are at the bottom  of the magazine.

This Sunday we are looking forward to Daniel preaching - if you are watching afterwards on the recording you can play it at half speed so it sounds like English. Only kidding - we really appreciate all Daniel and Pauline are doing with the children and young people these days when it is all becoming a bit wearing in terms of trying to be creative during the restrictions.

Next week we look forward to Scott being back at his desk (and you can wave at him at the window of the Manse front room).

Enjoy the mag.

Magazine No.32   (14th November)

With sadness …

It is with sadness we note the death of Stuart Clark’s father on Monday after a long illness.
We also heard this week of the passing of David Cameron's mother who lived in Kent.
Our thoughts and prayers are with both families as they come to terms with this and the organisational difficulties associated with Covid.

The Big Switch Over

From December the Sunday morning service will be moving over from Facebook to Youtube.
Did you know Maxwell has a You Tube channel.  Of course you did - we have been asking you to Subscribe to the channel for the last 4 weeks - why haven't you done it yet!!?
Please subscribe to our Youtube channel  It's totally free.

REMEMBRANCE

poppy mask
I really enjoyed last week’s Remembrance Service at Maxwell and particularly loved Pauline’s kitchen table talk.  Thank you one and all.  It must be tricky for the Poppy Fund this year with no collectors on the streets and no poppies on our doorsteps.
Although it’s a bit late for the 11th of the 11th , I have a small supply of double sided poppy face masks, appropriate for November.  Please contact me if you would like one.  No charge, but any donations made will be sent to the Poppy Fund.
Thanks

Girlguiding 1st Maxwell Mearns Remembers

poppies 1

This week on 11th November our Rainbows, Brownies and Guides met virtually on Zoom and Facebook Live and held our own acts of remembrance. The girls made poppies prior to their online meetings and we found out about the significance and symbolism of poppies in relation to Remembrance Day as well as hearing stories of brave, young females from WW2. We also talked about being thankful for key workers in recent times who have supported and served our country through the current crisis. 'We will remember them.'

Our families also explored the significance and symbolism of poppies and made poppy crafts on Remembrance Sunday. We talked about the hope and peace we have through Jesus and how God encourages us to remember important events. During WW1 women volunteering for the Red Cross made doughnuts for the soldiers so we enjoyed some doughnuts and gave thanks for our church family as well as those who have served and continue to serve our country.

The Scottish Poppy

Many of us are familiar with the WW1 poems by Binyon, McCrae and Owen but have you seen this short verse shared among Scottish soldiers? Author unknown.

The Scottish poppy has four lobes.

The first is for our fallen, they fought for us, we should remember them.

The second is for the fallen enemy, for they were soldiers too.

The third is for the civilian deaths, for they were needless and many.

The fourth is for those yet to fall, let them be few and far off.

GCM

On Wednesday at PULSE prayer meeting we heard from Jack Geddes and the work of Glasgow City Mission.
GCM have updated their webpage
 www.glasgowcitymission.com.
If you scroll to the bottom of the homepage you can watch the video about Barry and Chris (which Elizabeth referred to on Wednesday). It highlights well some of the work GCM do.

Quotable

Joy is what happens when you meet with Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
Joy is what happens when you grasp who he is, why he came, and where he is now.
It’s almost like a test of whether or not you really understand what’s going on in the story. These are not events that are meant to stay confined to our heads; they are meant to percolate down into our hearts and change the way we think, feel, and love.
So ask yourself: Do I know great joy?
If not, I’m sympathetic. Life is hard. Even the smoothest ride on this earth is marked by suffering, heartache and loss. Many people in today’s western world live at standards of health and prosperity that would have been unimaginable for 99.9% of the people who have ever lived on earth, but we still aren’t free from depression and loneliness and weakness. The happiest lives all end in the grave. There are a lot of reasons not to be happy on a day-to-day basis. If we tie our deep-down sense of well-being to our circumstances, joy will be elusive.
Christian joy is different.
It is built on knowing Christ, not remoulding our circumstances. The fact that Jesus is in heaven at this moment gives us a hope that transcends our daily troubles; because if Jesus is in heaven, then we will one day surely be with him there. The frustrations and sorrows of daily life are not the final word. They punctuate our story now, but they are not the story itself. And one day, they will be behind us.

Word-One-to-One-Banner

The Kirk Session has been encouraging us to build into our lives a desire to share the Gospel in a simple way with friends and family. To this end, we are being encouraged to use “The Word One To One” material.
Let’s all try and find one person to open John’s Gospel with. Remember to share online by zoom or by some other platform, you can download the exact same booklet. Simply go to our website; www.maxwellmearns.org and press the “Church Life” tab >  then press the “Reaching Out” tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. You see all 11 booklets listed and available for download.
Speak to Margo McN if you would like to see a copy of a booklet.

Booking for November

Booking a place for church is simple - use the link below. It just take a couple of minutes to select each Sunday in November. You might not get a place for every date you ask for so best to just choose them all and wait to see what is possible.
We will make sure everyone gets a chance to get along at some point if it's over subscribed.

You can book your space and you will be advised later if you have been successful.
