No.105    6th May 2022

Hi,
I was in two great cities this week - Belfast and Dublin...and very nice they were too.  However,  I was also reading about another two other cities this week. Augustine of Hippo wrote about two rival cities which people will certainly find themselves in: the city of Man and the city of God. Two cities from which we will choose to give our allegiance. We are all by nature involved with the city of Man, but by grace God is calling us to devotion to the city of God.  The city of Man's destiny is destruction, passing away (along with Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow) . The Heavenly City will last forever, with our eternal King....'our citizenship is in heaven and from it we wait a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.' Phil 3:20 And until then, we show which city we are in with allegiance to the King!

Now, if you think starting the magazine off with a wee quote from a 4th century theologian is a bit high brow, just keep reading...and there are a lot of other bits and pieces with quite a few events coming back after a 2 year break.

Enjoy the mag.

Letter from the Manse

Dear Congregation,scott
Just a wee note from me this week to tell you that I am in conversation with Mearns House Care Home.
Now that the threat of COVID is receding we will be allowed access again on Sunday afternoons to resume our 30-minute church service. They would also be delighted if we could grow personal relationships with the residents again.
I have agreed with the events manager a schedule for the second Sunday of each month (2.30-3pm). I have asked that we meet in a lounge where the piano is already present.
The first Sunday I have agreed to come and lead worship on will be the 12th June (then every second Sunday of the month thereafter). They were happy for me to bring a number of the congregation in the same manner as we did before. I would love you to be with me. I think it was such an encouragement for the residents (and maybe even the staff also).
I hope we might be able to encourage a few residents over to the Castle Coffee Club also on Tuesdays.

On a different and sad matter, our prayers are extended to Bob Cowan and family in the death of Bob’s wife, Irene. Irene passed away on 5th May. Let’s hold Bob and the family in our prayers.
With warmest regards and prayers,
Scott

““Prayer is both conversation and encounter with God. . . . We must know the awe of praising his glory, the intimacy of finding his grace, and the struggle of asking his help, all of which can lead us to know the spiritual reality of his presence.”  Tim Keller, from  his book 'Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God.

Brains in the Balcony

Most of your know that a lot of the background work that goes into making sure a morning service goes smoothly happens from the desk in the balcony. (And not just for those in the church, as those watching from home on Youtube are catered for from the same place.)
Pictured are just two of the key players involved -  Eilidh and Jonah. Eilidh was in top form last Sunday morning fixing something mid-service with a special tool - you can just about see the bent paperclip!

Two Are Better Than One”

helping hand

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother (or sister) is born for a time of adversity.” (Prov. 17:17); “Two are better than one…  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up… Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”(Eccl. 4:9-10, 12); “Encourage one another, all the more as the Day of his (Jesus’) return is drawing near.” (Heb. 10:25)

Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of friendship, and for you being a “friend of sinners.” We would despair if that was not so. The thought of growing older without close heart-friends has never been sadder, scarier, or more foolish.

Thank you for friends who, like me, need the riches of grace on a daily basis—friends who cherish the Gospel, and consider “in Christ” the best thing we’ve got going for us.

None of us need “friends” like Job had—those more likely to give correction than affection—more “skilled” at giving verses than spending heart-currency. If we need formulas and fixes, we can turn to YouTube or Google.

Jesus, and thank you for giving us all kinds of things to richly enjoy with one another (1 Tim. 6:17). You never designed life to be one big “hymn sing.” So, thank you for friendship that includes play and laughter, enjoyment of creation and music, exploration and adventure, fishing and catching, good food and unrushed conversation—and so much more.

Jesus, may your love, grace, and kindness shape our friendships, and our “friend-ing.” So Very Amen.

pray now

Are you on the Pray Now WhatsApp Group? Perhaps the start of the year is a good time to join in.
If you want to be added to the group to receive prayer news then simply ask Margaret and she will add your number to the list.

If you have a matter that you would like to be prayed about in this way, you can contact Margaret Boyd or Scott and they will organise for news to be sent out.

Hizkidz - crèche

On Sunday the West Room on the mid floor will be available for parents/grandparents and younger children to use.
The livestream of the service will (hopefully!) be playing on the TV and there are toys available too.
Speak to Pauline on Sunday who can show you which room to go into when the children leave for Hizkidz.
